Qualifying Report: British Grand Prix
The unpredictable British weather and blistering winds at Silverstone set the stage for a high-stakes qualifying hour, but it was championship leader Kimi Antonelli who rose above the chaos. The Mercedes teenage phenom locked in his fifth pole position of the 2026 season, delivering a flawless 1m 28.111s lap to deny Scuderia Ferrari a front-row lockout.
Ferrari pushed the Silver Arrows to the absolute limit, with Charles Leclerc securing a front-row slot in second and local hero Lewis Hamilton lining up a formidable third for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Q1 Hadjar Sets the Pace as Russell Finds the Gravel
The opening 18-minute segment began with a frantic rush out of the pit lane, with drivers immediately reporting intense gusts of wind across the start-finish line. Ferrari laid down an early marker, with Leclerc and Hamilton instantly trading the top spots.
The session was turned on its head when George Russell suffered a heavy front-axle lock-up at Luffield. The British driver slid helplessly through the gravel, tapping the barriers and damaging his front wing. While Russell managed to limp back to the pits for a swift nose-cone swap, it triggered an intense race against the clock to secure a timed lap. He eventually recovered to climb into the safety of the top ten.
At the bottom of the order, Aston Martin endured a catastrophic session, with both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso eliminated at the first hurdle. They were joined on the sidelines by Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto, who caused late yellow flags after an excursion at Becketts, and Cadillac’s Sergio Perez.
Q2 Verstappen Frustrated as Antonelli Bounces Back
As Q2 got underway, track limits became the primary enemy. Antonelli saw his initial flying lap deleted for crossing white lines, forcing the championship leader into a high-pressure second run. He responded like a veteran, forging his way to the top of the sheets with a 1m 28.493s.
Further down the grid, Max Verstappen was cutting a furious figure over the team radio. Complaining that his engine was “not responding as normal,” the Dutchman described his handling as a “disaster” before scraping through to the final shootout. McLaren also flirted with disaster, as Lando Norris only barely survived the cut-off in ninth.
Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto missed out on Q3 by a painful 0.032 seconds, leading a group of eliminated drivers that included Pierre Gasly, who was subsequently handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Stroll in Q1, Nico Hulkenberg, Ollie Bearman, Carlos Sainz, and Alex Albon.
Q3 Antonelli Silences the Tifosi
The final 12-minute battle for pole saw five teams go head-to-head. Hamilton raised the grandstands by claiming provisional pole on his opening run, only for Antonelli to immediately eclipse him by two-tenths of a second.
On the final runs, Antonelli spearheaded the field. Lighting up the timing screens with a purple middle sector, the Italian lowered his benchmark to an unassailable 1m 28.111s. Leclerc extracted everything from his Ferrari to snatch second place, finishing 0.175 seconds adrift of the rookie.
Hamilton settled for third on home soil, just ahead of a recovering Russell in fourth. Red Bull’s rookie sensation Isack Hadjar out-qualified his team leader once again to take an incredible fifth, split from a struggling Verstappen in seventh by McLaren’s Norris. Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bulls duo of Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson rounded out the top ten, setting up an explosive grid for the British Grand Prix.
