Bittersweet Victory for Antonelli in Canada After Heartbreak for Teammate Russell

Kimi Antonelli Wins The Canada GP 2026

Kimi Antonelli secured his fourth consecutive Grand Prix victory of the season in Montreal, but the championship leader admitted the triumph felt hollow following the sudden retirement of his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. The two Silver Arrows drivers dominated the narrative of the 68-lap Canadian Grand Prix, trading the lead and pushing each other to the absolute limit in a thrilling early-stage duel.

The intense wheel-to-wheel showcase saw both drivers make rare errors, trading lock-ups and wide moments on a demanding circuit. The fight reached a dramatic and premature conclusion on Lap 30 when Russell, who was leading the race at the time, suffered a terminal power unit failure at Turn 8. His forced retirement handed the lead over to Antonelli, who cruised to victory but later confessed that he would have preferred to see their spectacular fight play out to the chequered flag.

Reflecting on his race, Antonelli acknowledged that he made a critical mistake right after reclaiming the lead and attempting to gap his teammate. While expressing sympathy for Russell’s mechanical heartbreak, the 19-year-old Italian emphasized the importance of taking the maximum points on offer, which significantly alters the landscape of the 2026 World Championship.

With Russell scoring a costly DNF, Antonelli has extended his advantage at the top of the Drivers’ standings to a massive 43 points after just five rounds. Despite the commanding buffer, the championship leader remains highly cautious. He highlighted that Russell’s extreme pace in Montreal proved they are still running neck-and-neck, while also warning that McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull are rapidly closing the technical gap. Looking ahead to the next round in Monaco, Antonelli stressed that Mercedes must continue raising the bar to withstand the looming threat from their rivals.
